The Joy Of Putting Wheels On Everything I Own
Dawn Ho • Feb 23, 2022
A year ago, I moved into a home to live by myself for the first time ... ever.
Some people worry, “Will I feel lonely?", "Will I finish all my groceries every week?”
I was stuck on: Will I be able to move all my furniture by myself?
Given my stubbornly independent disposition, I didn’t like to depend on anyone. No asking for help to clean under the bed. No waiting around for someone stronger to help me rearrange a room. I wanted to move anything, anytime—by myself.
Enter: caster wheels.
There’s a quiet kind of power in making everything in your home roll.
Storage bins. Bookshelves. Laundry baskets. Tool carts. If it can be moved, I’ve probably put caster wheels on it. At this point, it’s less of a home improvement hack and more of a personal philosophy.
Why Wheels?
Because dragging heavy stuff sucks. Because rearranging a space should take five minutes, not fifty. Because reaching the outlet behind the shelf shouldn't require moving a mountain.
Wheels are simple, cheap, and wildly effective. They turn heavy, clunky furniture into something I can push with one hand. They let me change my space on a whim. Want to turn the living room into a gym? Done. Need to vacuum under the shelf? Easy. Rearranging just because I’m in a mood? No problem.
Yes, It’s Ugly. I Don’t Care.
Let’s be honest—casters aren’t sexy. I’ve accepted that some of my “solutions” look like props from a bad office move. But form follows function, and rolling a storage shelf out of the way with one hand is its own kind of beauty.
The Unexpected Wins
- Cleaning is easier. I can vacuum under everything now.
- My space adapts. My living room changes into a gym in seconds.
- Guests are impressed. Or at least confused—but either way, it’s a conversation starter.
Things I’ve Wheeled
- A 15-foot tall tree
- Trash and recycling bins (indoors)
- My laser cutter (to move it to an open-air spot)
- My coffee table — to make way for a workout
No, I haven’t put wheels on my bed. There are limits. Barely.
Final Thoughts
It started with one coffee table. Now, I keep a stash of caster wheels in my workshop, just in case. The next time I hesitate to move something heavy, I ask: Could this roll?
Nine times out of ten, the answer is yes.
